Glissantâs paradigm for Caribbean literatureâs âirruption into modernityâ is predicated on a complex range of experiences, aesthetic categories, and binary deconstructions. Goodisonâs description of the surprisingly hopeful potential of a disoriented modernity echoes his attention to both landscape and belonging as well as love and confrontationâkey aspects of Goodisonâs paintings and painterly writings.
By invoking paint media, particularly color and pigment, she makes visible the queer slippages of time, space, and tradition. Glissant argues that Caribbean culture encompasses âa general instinctive response against the ambition of imposing a âsingleâ historical time, that of the West. ⦠One of the most disturbing consequences of colonization could well be this notion of a single History, and therefore of power, which has been imposed on others by the Westâ (92, 93). In her writing and painting, Goodison uses her own family tree and the history of artâin an expanded, hybridized senseâto both reveal and disrupt linear, Western timelines steeped in violence and power. Following Glissant, literary scholars have become increasingly attuned to these productive disruptions of Western conceptions of time, and Wai Chee Dimock has argued for the importance of âdeep timeâ in literary studies: attention to âour long sojourn on this planet, a sojourn marked by layers of relations, weaving our history into our dwelling place, and making us what we are, a species with a sedimented imprintâ (Other Continents 6). Dimockâs theory of deep time is marked by its turn to craftââweaving our historyââas well as the metaphors of pigmentââlayers of relationsâ and âsedimented imprint.â As a matter of scale, deep time takes seriously the literal layers of sediment that convey a geologically massive account of time and space.
